Video Series on Mount Athos

Start at the top and work your way down…

Sidetrack and Diversions

The books I mentioned yesterday on Teresa/John of the Cross were:
Merton, Thomas (1976) Ascent to Truth (Continuum)
Williams, Rowan (2003) Teresa of Avila (Continuum)
For more on Roman attitudes towards Christians try the superb:
Wilkin, Robert L (2003) The Christians as the Romans Saw Them (Yale)
On the early church generally, Wilken has written the equally good: The Spirit [...]

Chalcedon Wordle

It seems to me that Wordle is one of the net tools which could be useful in worship. If you were to use the image above for meditation you would become suffused with the Statement of Chalcedon on the definition of Christ.

Pubs, Clubs & Alternative Worship

James mentioned a collection of videos made by students of Calvin College in the US of a visit to London in 2008. They focus on the worship led emergent church movement and you can get to them via their channel on Youtube.

Free Lectures

Ok, I acknowledge that the thought of more lectures might not be the most pressing issue for you at the moment, but bear with me!
There are a number of universities who are putting their lecture series online. These are recordings made of undergraduate lectures and are therefore well within the scope of things you [...]

St. Paisius Monastery

I came across a blog post the other day which gives a glimpse into monastic life, both for the nuns and also for the wider members of the community who visit it from time to time. Give five minutes of your life to reading it!
What I Do in My Spare Time.

Monasticism Today

This may be of interest - I would have showed it yesterday if time permitted. It is a video made by Father Jay Finelli who writes:
I recently visited some dear friends of mine, the Capuchin Sisters of Nazareth at their new Postulant house in Bastress, PA. Meet the young women preparing to become Capuchine Sisters at [...]

The Dissolution of the Monasteries

I didn’t really cover much of the Dissolution yesterday, but the reaction of the population to the closing of the monasteries by Henry’s commissioners tells you something about the role of religious communities in 16th century England.
Radio 4’s In Our Time recently did a good 45 minute programme on the Dissolution.

Following up the Worth Retreat

I have been asked for some book recommendations on the themes I spoke about on the retreat at Worth Abbey. Ever obedient, here’s a list:
On contemplative prayer, I would recommend:
- Martin Laird, Into the Silent Land
- Thomas Merton, Ascent to Truth
On Orthodoxy:
- Kallistos Ware, The Orthodox Way
- Hilarion Alfayev, The Mystery of Faith: An [...]
