A Word from the Holy Fathers

I’ve linked to the Monachos website on a few occasions, and I’m glad to be able to plug a podcast that Fr Dcn Matthew is running called “A Word from the Holy Fathers“. I met Dcn Matthew a couple of years back as a conference in St Albans and heard him speak on Scripture and Irenaeus. I can highly recommend him!
Free Lectures
Ok, I acknowledge that the thought of more lectures might not be the most pressing issue for you at the moment, but bear with me!
There are a number of universities who are putting their lecture series online. These are recordings made of undergraduate lectures and are therefore well within the scope of things you should be engaging with. I tend to listen to these whilst driving the 100 minutes from my house to Bristol and it is surprising how much you can get through. I’ve mentioned some on Dante’s Divine Comedy, but there are others:
University of California, Berkeley
- History 106B The Roman Empire
- History 5 The Making of Modern Europe, 1453 to the Present
- History 4A The Ancient Mediterranean World
Yale
For the following, you’ll need iTunes:
Stanford
This is a classic piece of scholarship of the New Quest for the Historical Jesus school.
Reformed Theological Seminary
- History of Philosophy and Christian Thought
- Church History Courses
- New Testament Courses
- Old Testament Courses
Also look at Concordia Seminary
The Dissolution of the Monasteries
I didn’t really cover much of the Dissolution yesterday, but the reaction of the population to the closing of the monasteries by Henry’s commissioners tells you something about the role of religious communities in 16th century England.
Radio 4′s In Our Time recently did a good 45 minute programme on the Dissolution.
Essences and Energies
Last Thursday we discussed the Eastern doctrine of the essence and energies of God. There are a few resources on the web which might help in getting your head around the distinctions. There are two podcasts on this subject. The first is from Our Life in Christ and is part of a series on relics. The second is from the Illumined Heart podcast. You can listen to them here on this site, or visit the podcast sites for more info.
There are some articles worth reading:
- Dr. David Bradshaw on the Concept of Divine Energies
- Gregory Palamas: Knowledge, Prayer and Vision by M C Steenberg
- Selection from the Chapters on Knowledge by St Maximos the Confessor
- On the Uncreated Essence and Uncreated Energies by St. Gregory Palamas
The Filioque Clause
“Our Life in Christ” have broadcast a good radio show on the Filioque clause. The show is well worth podcasting and have a look at the archives too.
Radio 4′s In Our Time also did a programme on the Great Schism which is worth a listen.
The Scandal of the Cross
There is a useful discussion on the Illumined Heart, an Orthodox radio show, of differing models of the atonement (54 mins).
Kevin and Steve discuss the rich array of interpretations of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross with Professor of New Testament Interpretation, Dr. Joel B. Green, of Asbury Theological Seminary (Methodist-Wesleyan), and why the reduction of this variety to a single, exclusive view of the atonement – the penal substitutionary model – poses its own scandal, one that is foreign to the New Testament! Buckle up your seat belts!
Joel Green, along with Mark Baker, recently wrote “The Scandal of the Cross” (IVP: 2000) and is worth hearing.Listen here, but do take the time to look around the podcast too. There is plenty of good stuff.
